Do You Believe in Miracles?

Micah did really well following his surgery. He was pretty sedated the majority of Friday, partly due to the anesthesia from surgery, but also because they gave him ketamine after his surgery to place a PICC line. We spent all of Friday evening with him and I headed back to my room once Andy and Noah went home. But I still wandered down to the NICU during the night to spend time with Micah every couple hours (I was on a strict pumping schedule...so glad that's over!).

His nurse Julie, was amazing. She was so good with Micah, and she held nothing back from me. She was having concerns about his posturing. Typically a newborn curls into a ball, and when they arch their back and keep their arms stretched out, it could be due to a number of problems, including brain damage. It was one more thing that caused me extreme worry, and one more thing I just had to let go and put into God's hands in order to have some sense of peace. I tried to keep telling myself it was just his body's way of reacting to the major surgery he just went through.

Sometime Friday night (I think around 1 a.m. - it's all such a blur :-)), I called Julie from my room to get an update. She mentioned that she was very concerned with his incision. It looked fine when she first started her shift, and in a matter of about an hour it had turned very red, inflamed, and very warm to the touch. My heart sank as I made my way from my room down to the NICU...one more thing. It scared me to look at it, as I wondered what was going on inside his little body. An infection that came on that fast? Had something gone wrong with the surgical site inside?

I made my way back to my room (again with my crazy pumping schedule), called Andy to let him know what was going on, and spent the next 20 minutes praying specifically that God would place His healing hand on Micah's incision, that He would heal our baby, that Micah's body would be spared of going through any major infection.

I then tried really hard to get some sleep.

A couple hours later (maybe around 4 a.m.), I called Julie again to get an update on how he was doing. She went on and on about how his pain was, the ventilator settings, random other stuff, and then threw in, "Oh and I'm not sure why or how, but the redness in the incision is almost completely gone."

Needless to say, tears streamed down my face as I thanked God for an amazing answer to prayer.

A picture of Micah with the posturing he was doing: head arched back, arms stretched out to the side; you can also see the redness in his incision here.
