Micah James' Birth Story

Our second son, Micah James Baughman, entered this world on Tuesday, January 17th at 6:54 p.m., weighing 5 lb. 5 oz., and measuring 19.75 inches long. And here is his very eventful story (Beware: very long, as my few and far between blog posts usually are; and also maybe a little TMI in some areas)...

I started to think my water had potentially broken on Sunday afternoon, and if it did it was just a very slow leak, so I kind of ignored it. I was thinking this was just very wishful thinking, as I was REALLY looking forward to not being pregnant anymore, and I was VERY excited to meet our new baby (gender unknown).

Monday came around, and I didn't feel much all day, so I thought maybe it was just my wishful thinking the day before and nothing else. On Tuesday, Noah and I were walking around Target and I felt something that I was sure had to be my water, so we left and I called the advice nurse. I was thinking since I was just down the street from the Elk Grove Sutter office, they might be able to squeeze me in and check. She said because I was so far along (the day before 39 weeks), the doctor on call wanted me to go straight to Labor and Delivery to be checked.

Needless to say, it was shortly after lunch, Noah's naptime, and I was not excited about having to drive into downtown for something that I was sure was still just wishful thinking. I called Andy and my Mom, and I finally decided I would follow the doctor's orders. Because I thought I would probably be checked and then discharged, my Mom came with me and Andy stayed at work and I would update him as I heard anything.

We got down to the hospital, they checked me in and checked my water. The test surprisingly came back negative for my water breaking but they wanted to do an ultrasound to check my water level to make sure it wasn't low if I had a slow leak, just in case. It surprisingly came back at an abnormally high level and that gave them cause for concern to look a little further. They found shortly after that the baby's stomach looked very large and distended and wanted to deliver via c-section to make sure it was okay. (At this point I was still hoping to attempt a VBAC, and my chances for that looked like they were decreasing anyway, based on the fact that the baby was still extremely high - a completely different issue).

I had been informing Andy of everything at this point, and he was now on his way to the hospital. By the time he got there, they were ready to wheel me to the OR and get me prepped. It all went so fast at this point! Before we knew it, Micah James entered this world - another BOY!!! He didn't cry at first, which was really scary, considering we didn't really know what was wrong at this point...they got him to cry and began initial assessments on him. We were surprised he only weighed 5 lbs 5 oz, being that he was full term. The NICU team was on standby and decided that he was stable enough to come with me to the recovery room. This was the first time I got to hold him and my first thought was he felt sooooo tiny in my arms. It felt so good though to finally have my baby in my arms...I'll continue the story in my next post. :-) (Did I mention I'm tired!?)

On a quick different note, I received an amazing devotional book called, "Jesus Calling" from my Grandparents for my birthday (January 22nd, 5 days after Micah was born). The daily devotionals have almost been a little creepy (for lack of a better word, because I mean this in a good way!) with how they are hitting home to me, and how applicable they have been to the situation we are in. I feel as if God literally reached down and placed the book in my hands and said, "Here my child, this is what I want you to hear from me through this journey." I'll be talking more about them, but a couple days after I received it, Andy and I read the one the day Micah was born, January 17th:

"Come to Me with a thankful heart, so that you can enjoy My presence. This is the day that I have made. I want you to rejoice today, refusing to worry about tomorrow. Search for all that I have prepared for you, anticipating abundant blessings and accepting difficulties as they come. I can weave miracles into the most mundane day if you keep your focus on Me.

Come to Me with all your needs, knowing that My glorious riches are a more-than-adequate supply. Stay in continual communication with Me, so that you can live above your circumstances even while you are in the midst of them. Present your requests to Me with thanksgiving, and My Peace, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your heart and mind."

Thank you Lord for Micah, our new beautiful blessing.
